תקציר:
Jade Empire הוא שילוב יוצא מן הכלל של משחק תפקידים עם משחק פעולה/מכות. בתחילת המשחק תבחרו את הדמות שברצונכם לשחק מתוך מגוון של שש דמויות - שלוש מהן גברים ושלוש מהן נשים. כל אחת מהדמויות הללו ניחנו בכשרונות מסוימים - חלקן חזקות חלקן זריזות וכו'. יתרה מכך, לדמויות יש סגנונות אומנויות לחימה מיוחדים להן (ועל כך בהמשך). לחלופין, תוכלו לעצב בעצמכם את הדמות שלכם, החל מנתוני הכוח והצ'י ועד סגנון הלחימה ההתחלתי שלכם. המשחק הוא משחק במצב גוף שלישי, כך שאתם יכולים להסתובב בעולם, או לפחות באזור הרחב שבו אתם נמצאים כרגע, כמעט באופן חופשי. בעודכם נהנים מהעיצוב הסיני המרהיב של העולם, תוכלו לפגוש אנשים מעניינים, שלרבים מהם סיפורים משל עצמם. אחד האלמנטים החשובים במשחק הוא האופן בו תבחרו להתייחס לסביבה שלכם - המשחק ישים לב לתשובותיכם, ולתגובותיכם, לתחינות, ובקשות הסובבים ועל פי כך תוכלו לקבוע את הכיוון אליו יפנה המשחק במורד קו העלילה - השאלה האם סיפורכם יהיה סיפור גבורה אצילי, או סיפור אודות נבל אכזר תלוי רק בכם, ולא יגרע מההנאה ומתוכן המשחק. לדוגמה, יהיו אנשים שיפחדו וירתעו ממכם במידה ותבנו לעצמכם שם של נבלים מחוספסים, אך במקביל יהיו גורמים אחרים, מפוקפקים יותר, שישימו עין עליכם ויפנו אליכם. בנוסף לכך, יהיו אנשים שירצו להצטרף אליכם במסעותיכם ברחבי אימפרית הירקן, ואף יחסם יהיה בהתאם לאופי שתפתחו לדמות שלכם.
