FruityLoops היא תוכנה מקצועית לכל דבר, המיועדת לעורך ויוצר מוזיקה ביתי או מקצועי. זוהי תוכנת סיכוונסר (sequencer) ליצירת צליל ולופים של מקצבים. פירושו של דבר: התוכנה מאפשרת לבנות תבניות של מוזיקה (חלקי שיר - patterns), לסדר אותם בסדר כלשהו, להציג אותם ולערוך אותם תוך שימוש במסנכרן, ולאחר מכן לנגן אותם. לכל ערוץ שמע יש כפתור, בו ניתן לשלוט על הלופ של התופים או המלודיה שמנוגנת. לתוכנה מצורפת ספריה גדולה מאוד של צלילים שניתנים לעריכה, וניתן לייבא צלילים מתוכנה חיצונית. יתרון גדול של התוכנה הוא מנגנון ה- piano roll: זהו מנגנון של יצירת מלודיה, כך שלמעשה אין צורך בmidi- חיצוני ליצירת מנגינה. הצליל מוצג ויזואלית ע"י תווים, וע"י גרפים.




לאחר שיוצרים מנגינה או מקצב של תופים (לופ של תופים), ניתן גם להוסיף מגוון רחב מאוד של אפקטים כגון echo, reverb, phaser וכדומה. יצירת צליל תעשה בדרך כלל באופן גרפי ובשליטה על כפתורים: שינוי בתכונה מסוימת כגון attack, delay או sustain יגרום לגרף המתאר את הצליל להשתנות.

התוכנה תומכת בהתקן MIDI – ניתן לחבר סינתיסייזר ולהשתמש בו עם התוכנה. ניתן לשמור את המוזיקה שהורכבה לפורמט של קובץ midi או להקליט קובץ wav או mp3. השליטה על הצליל נעשית בזמן אמת, תוך כדי השמעתו. ניתן לשלב את FruityLoops לעבודה עם תוכנות סיכוונסר אחרות דוגמת LIVE.
