Games are NON PARALLEL APPLICATIONS, which means that even if you'll have 32 cores the game will not use them, and you'll get 1 r 2 cores with max load, and 30 cores on hold.
Now, about multitasking - thats another story. You WILL get better desktop performance with a quad core CPU, BUT the C2Q are not really quad core CPUs, they are 2 C2D-oes "glued" together, if you will. That means they have no shared cache and therefore absolutely no connections between cores 1-2 and 3-4. This is a huge disadvantage when it comes to cooling, as windows uses cores according to load and not heat (like Linux), so you may end up getting 2 cores at 30 degrees while the other 2 are at 50.
The bottom line is, you DON'T need a quad core CPU right now. Yu'll be better off buying a simple C2D oa Athln and getting a true quad core CPU when it's available and more supported.
