If you're having trouble getting your hands on a PlayStation 3 (PS3), don't worry -- wait until 2010 (at the earliest), and you'll apparently be able to get a PlayStation 4 (PS4), reports SmartHouse. A PS4 will be launched by Sony but not until at least 2010 claims the Vice President of Technology for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Paul Holman. ...
"To say that there will be no PS4 because of a management change is a bit far fetched[,"] he said.
While that's mildly amusing, Holman also discussed some of the updates to the PS3 in the next few years, including additional media center capabilities that should help the PS3 compete with Microsoft's Xbox 360.
Speaking of Sony products, the company is saying that electronics sales so far this holiday season are "better than expected," reports Reuters. Sony Corp. said on Monday U.S. sales of electronics have been better than expected so far this holiday shopping season, fueled by demand for flat panel televisions and digital cameras.
Stan Glasgow, president and chief operation officer of Sony Electronics, the Japanese company's $11 billion electronics arm, said Sony had stayed away from the deep discounts that spurred thousands to crowd stores on "Black Friday," the day after the U.S. Thanksgiving Holiday.
Bad Blu-ray Buzz?
I don't put too much stock in research on "online social media buzz," which research firm Cymfony reports on, so take the following with a grain of salt.
The firm's latest report, "A Blue Christmas for Blu-ray," says that HD DVD is receiving more "positive discussions" online than Blu-ray, reports Business 2.0. - Though Blu-ray and HD DVD are getting roughly the same number of mentions online, there are 46 percent more positive discussions about HD DVD than Blu-ray.
- More than half of the discussions of either format were "neutral" – neither positive nor negative. Blu-ray had equal proportions of positive and negative buzz (about 23.5 percent each), while HD DVD had a far greater proportion of positive buzz (14.2 percent negative vs. 32.9 percent positive).
- Few posts focus on storage capacity and advanced interactivity, two features that would play to Blu-ray's advantage.
- Sony's track record with Betamax and MiniDisc is making it an easy target for Blu-ray's online detractors.
- Sony's inclusion of a Blu-ray player with the PS3 may have backfired: Some gamers were unhappy that it drove up the player's cost and pushed them into the Blu-ray camp.
Babies Love HDTV
Our neighbors to the north, despite wondering who will pay for the digital transition, apparently are grooming the next generation of Canadians to love high-definition television with the creation of BabyHD, reports Gearlog.
Apparently the station will play HD programming aimed at children under 3.
