תוכנה זו נמצאת למעשה, גם ב-Windows. היא סורקת את הדיסק הקשיח ומזהה קטעי קבצים המפוזרים במקומות שונים בדיסק באופן לא רציף, ומסדרת אותם באופן רציף. הדבר אולי נשמע מוזר, אך בפועל כך מתנהל אחסון הנתונים בדיסק. אנו שומרים קבצים בתיקייה מסוימת והדבר נכון מבחינת הרישום, אבל בפועל הקובץ נכתב במקום כלשהו בדיסק ומנוהל ומשויך לתיקייה על ידי טבלת הניהול של הקבצים בדיסק. תוכנת ניהול הדיסק כותבת במקום הפנוי הראשון שהיא מגלה, ולכן ייתכן שהמקום אינו מספיק לכל הקובץ. היא ממשיכה לחפש את המקום הפנוי הבא וכן הלאה, עד שכל הקובץ נכתב.
