הכותר החדש בסדרת "הנסיך הפרסי" אומנם לא מבוסס באופן רשמי על סרט הקולנוע שעלה לאקרנים לאחרונה, אולם מרוב הבחינות הרלוונטיות אין הבדל בינו ובין כל משחק-סרט טיפוסי: ההחלטה על פיתוחו הוצמדה ללא כל ספק למכירתו המוצלחת של המותג לצרכי ההפקה הקולנועית, וכך גם תאריך צאתו שנפל "במקרה" על השבוע בו עלה הסרט למסכים ברחבי אירופה.
בהתחשב בנסיבות, כנראה שאנחנו צריכים להוריד את הכובע בפני Ubisoft על שהצליחה להנפיק משחק פעולה סביר לחלוטין תחת מגבלות שבדרך כלל מניבות זבל מוחלט. ובכל זאת, אם לוקחים בחשבון את הטרילוגיה שהחלה ב-2003 (וש-Forgotten Sands אמור להיות מעין סיפור צדדי עבורה) ואת היצירה המקורית יותר שקיבלנו ב-2008, בהחלט מדובר בכותר החלש ביותר בסדרה הזו עד כה - כזה שגם המעריצים השרופים בהחלט יכולים להסתפק בהשכרתו.
צבאותיו של המלך שלמה
The Forgotten Sands מתרחש עלילתית בין המשחק הראשון בטרילוגיה המחודשת להמשכו הקודר ממנו. מיקומו בציר העלילתי אינו נובע, חלילה, מרצונה של Ubisoft לשוב ולבאר פרטים שאולי לא הובהרו כראוי בפעם הראשונה, אלא פשוט משום שככל הידוע לנו מדובר בתקופה שבה לא קרה שום דבר חשוב. מכאן, אתם בהחלט מוזמנים להסיק שכל ההתרחשויות במשחק הזה בעצם... לא מאוד חשובות. זהו סיפור צדדי שיכולנו לחיות בלעדיו.
רוב המעשייה מועברת כבר בקטע הפתיחה, במהלכו אנו עדים לניסיון השתלטות על טירתו של מאליק, אחד מאחיו של הנסיך הפרסי. אותו מאליק לא למד עדיין שיש בעולמו כוחות כשופים שלא כדאי להתעסק איתם, וברגע פזיז במיוחד הוא משחרר את "צבא שלמה המלך" (כן כן, שלמה שלנו), המתגלה ככוח רצחני שעשוי להפוך את העולם כולו למדבר אחד גדול. שלמה כמובן לא אשם בכל זה - הצבא נשלח בכלל להרוג אותו, ולכן הוחבא במרתפי הארמון. רק שילובם של שני מפתחות, האחד בידיו של הנסיך והשני בידי אחיו, ישיב את הצבא הארור לכלאו.
בתוך טירה נטושה, מלאת לוחמי-שאול מאיימים, עושה הנסיך את דרכו לעבר אחיו. העלילה לא עומדת להתפתח באופן משמעותי מעבר לנקודה זו, והצלע הנשית בחבורה, שבחלק ממשחקי הסדרה הפיגה בהצלחה את הבדידות, היא כאן לא יותר מרוח רפאים הזויה שצצה מידי פעם כדי להעביר לנו הנחיות. אפילו הסרטונים אינם מוקפדים ומושקעים כבעבר. ייתכן שהיה מוטב לוותר מראש על כל עניין ה"עלילה" הזה, ופשוט לשלב במשחק קטעים מהסרט.
