הסיפור של המשחק הראשון, Origins, התמקד בארגון לוחמים קטן ומסתורי בשם ה-Grey Wardens, שמטרתו היחידה היא להגן על העולם מתערובת גזעים מושחתת, אפלה ואכזרית בשם "ה-Dark Spawn", שמדי כמה דורות יוצאים מבטן האדמה ברבבותיהם למחות כל דבר שנקרה בדרכם. ה-Wardens הם לוחמי-עילית ממגוון דתות וגזעים, גם גברים וגם נשים, שמהווים את קו ההגנה הראשון והאחרון של הציוויליזציה כנגד נחילי האפילה.

ב-Origins שחקנו אחד משני הניצולים היחידים של הארגון בממלכת Ferelden הדרומית, ומשימתנו הראשית הייתה לעצור את ה-Blight (מגיפת ה-Dark Spawn) לפני שהארץ תיפול והרשע יתפשט לממלכות השכנות. במהלך Blight מתאגדים יצורי האופל בצורה מסודרת תחת הנהגתו של אל קדום ומקולל, שלובש צורה של דרקון - ובצורה כזאת מהווים איום על עצם קיומו של העולם.

המשחק הראשון היה מרשים, מהנה (וגם מצליח, המותג החדש שנמכר הכי מהר בתולדות Bioware), בין השאר בזכות האפשרות להשתתף בסיפור של גיבורנו על ידי בחירת מוצא והיסטוריה יחודיים, חבורת דמויות גדולה ומעניינת וקרב רב דקויות ומאתגר. למרות הלינאריות היחסית – לא היה המון תוכן צידי למשחק - השחקן יכול היה לעצב את יחסיו עם דמויות, בתוך ומחוץ לחבורה, בצורה מאוד חופשית, ולבצע בחירות שישפיעו, לרוב באופן קטן אך מורגש, על ההמשך. סה"כ, משחק תפקידים אפי למהד
