לפי מקורות מידע הלהקה בחרה את השם ניקלבק כי אחד מחברי הלהקה עבד פעם במכולת ובקנדה השקלים נקראים "ניקל" אז הוא אמר כל הזמן "here is your NICKEL BACK" מתי שהוא הביא עודף.

שנים ראשונות:
ניקלבק התחילו כלהקת קאברים. בשנת 1996 הם עברו לונקובר כדי להקליט את אלבום הדמו שלהם "Hesher" שכלל 7 שירים. לאחר זמן מה ניקלבק התחילו להקליט את אלבום הבכורה שלהם "Curb" שיצא בשנת 1998. לניקלבק הייתה דרך פרסום מקורית ביותר - צ'אד (הסולן) ביקש מחבריו ובני משפחתו לבקש שירים של ניקלבק ברדיו וכך כבר לאחר זמן מה לניקלבק התחילו להיותר מעריצים רבים. בשנת 1998 החתימה את הלהקה חברת התקליטים "EMI". הלהקה הופיעה ביחד עם להקות רבות מפורסמות כמוDoors Down 3 ועוד...
