PAST SIMPLE
1. אנו משתמשים בעבר פשוט על מנת לבטא פעולה שהתרחשה והסתיימה בעבר בזמן ידוע.
2. צורת השלילה בעבר פשוט:
Didn't + V1 (צורת הבסיס של הפועל)



The simple past expresses an action in the past taking place once, never, several times. It can also be used for actions taking place one after another or in the middle of another action.
Form of Simple Past
Positive - I spoke
Negative - I did not speak
Question - Did I speak?


Use of Simple Past
action in the past taking place once, never or several times
Example: He visited his parents every weekend.
actions in the past taking place one after the other
Example: He came in, took off his coat and sat down.
action in the past taking place in the middle of another action
Example: When I was having breakfast, the phone suddenly rang.
if sentences type II (If I talked, …)
Example: If I had a lot of money, I would share it with you.


PAST PROGRESSIVE
1. לתאור מצבים מתמשכים בעבר או פעולות מתמשכות.
She was studying for a test all morning.
2. לתאור פעולה באמצע התרחשותה
Yesterday at 5 o'clockI was watching the news on TV.
3. לתאור פעולה מתמשכת שנקטעת על ידי פעולה פתאומית:
I was washingmy hair when the phone suddenly rang.
חפיפת השיער החלה לפני הטלפון והיתה באמצע התרחשותה כאשר הטלפון פתאום צלצל וקטע אותה. הפעולה הארוכה תבוא בעבר ממושך ואילו הקצרה (הטלפון) בעבר פשוט.
4. לתאור מספר פעולות ממושכות שמתבצעות במקביל בזמן מסויים בעבר.
I was listening to the radio while Uri was reading.
זאת להבדיל מרצף פעולות שנעשות בזו אחר זו בעבר – במקרה כזה נשתמש בעבר פשוט:
I came home, changed my clothes and prepared lunch for my family.
5. צורת השלילה של העבר הממושך:
Wasn't / weren't + V ing
